British Standard BS AU 159 Puncture Repair Criteria
When you suffer a flat tyre caused by a screw, nail, or sharp road debris, you don't always need to purchase an expensive new tyre. Where safety regulations permit, Ali Recovery Group provides permanent roadside puncture repairs strictly compliant with British Standard BS AU 159.
UK safety law strictly delineates between repairable puncture zones and fatal structural casing damage. We perform a rigorous 4-point inspection before undertaking any repair:
- Minor Repair Zone: Puncture must reside within the central 60% to 70% of the tread (the 'T' zone).
- Puncture Diameter: Penetrating object must not exceed 6mm in diameter.
- Sidewall & Shoulder Exclusion: Sidewall or outer shoulder punctures can NEVER be repaired due to lateral flexing.
- Internal Casing Check: The tyre must not have been driven completely flat (which pulverizes the inner butyl liner).
Vulcanized Combi-Plug & Patch vs. Push-In Strings
Many unscrupulous roadside operators push temporary external rubber "strings" into punctures from the outside without dismounting the tyre. These string plugs are strictly illegal for permanent highway use under UK construction and use regulations because they do not seal the inner air liner and fail to inspect internal cord integrity.
Our mobile technicians remove the tyre from the wheel rim, inspect the internal steel belts, ream and clean the puncture channel, and insert an integrated vulcanized combi-stem mushroom patch. Using chemical cold-curing vulcanizing fluid, the rubber plug creates a molecular weld with the tyre carcass—providing a permanent repair speed-rated to the tyre's original factory specification.
Spare Wheel Fitting with Calibrated Torque Wrenches
If your puncture is located on the sidewall or you have suffered an explosive blowout, we safely fit your vehicle's spare or space-saver wheel roadside. We carry high-tonnage hydraulic trolley jacks and cordless impact wrenches to quickly handle rusted or overtightened wheel nuts.
Critically, we never tighten wheel bolts blindly. We use precision calibrated Norbar mechanical torque wrenches adjusted to your vehicle manufacturer's exact torque settings (typically 110Nm to 160Nm). This prevents warped brake discs, damaged wheel hub threads, or dangerously loose wheels.
Space-Saver Limitations & Pressure Verification
If we fit a temporary space-saver spare wheel to your vehicle, remember these crucial safety rules:
- Pressure Check: Space-savers require significantly higher pressure (typically 55 to 60 PSI) than standard tyres. We inflate and verify your spare before you drive.
- Maximum Speed: Never exceed 50 MPH (80 km/h) on a space-saver spare wheel.
- Maximum Distance: Space-savers are designed for emergency transit only (maximum recommended distance 50 miles).
