Modern common-rail turbo diesel engines (TDI, CDTi, HDi, dCi, BlueTEC) operate under extreme fuel rail pressures exceeding 2,000 bar (nearly 30,000 PSI). When a modern diesel vehicle runs completely dry, air is drawn into the low-pressure lift pump, fuel filter canister, high-pressure pump (HPFP), and common rail.
